After reading Half-Blood Prince, I felt compelled to make icony goodness; but since I didn’t want to go the same route as a lot of iconmakers and make either text onlies or movie icons with HBP quotes . . . I used fanart from BloodyMary, one of my favourite HP artists, to make a few icons. I must warn you, though, that the following graphics contain a lot of ‘ship spoilers. So if you haven’t read HBP yet, you may not want to proceed any further.

Blame it on a number of things, but the 8th episode of the new Doctor Who show really resonated with me. I feel silly admitting it, but I nearly cried at the end. So here's 40 minimalistic icons from the "Father's Day" episode. Basically, 20 are with text - the other 20 are the exact same ones without text.

On the dry erase board outside my dorm, my roomie and I started a poll: is Vaughn dead or not? And while some people just voted, others added very humourous comments. Which being the obsessive icon maker that I am, I had to turn into icons.

Grab-bag encore! Quite a bit of LMM goodness, because I can't help myself. And the pastel colours weren't intentional, at first ... especially not with the rather bittersweet Pat quotes. I apologize in advance for the loooong length of my credits: I didn't really mean to ramble that much.

I haft made small slightly graven images for which I must blame Jane Austen. Their original sources were little and fuzzy, so I offer these unto thee as BASES. I haft played with colour balance and contrast, and cropped them intriguingly, but that is all.

Gentle reader, thou mayst do what thine soul likest with these bases. Chop them up, recolourize them, aye, even offer them as sacrifices in pagan rituals. Thou shalt only say please and thank you - the divine credit is not necessary in such a case.

Disclaimer:
Yes, I know that the canonization of the Remus/Tonks ship caused a fair amount of anger and confusion among HP fans. Some people were thrilled. Some weren't. So before long all kinds of crazy theories emerged, involving Polyjuice Potions and Imperius Curses and childhood crushes.

Personally, I am a R/T girl. But my imaginings of their relationship is rather different from what happened in HBP, so I understand the points raised by anti-shippers.

Thus, I've made two mixes. #1 is a tragic tale of incompatibility, mostly comprised of bizarre slow songs. #2 is for the romantic idealists of the world, and the songs tend to be more upbeat and peppy. (Although both mixes contain a Chopin piano piece ... I can't help myself.) And being the sneaky bugger that I am, I'm posting the sad mix first. Feel free to download it, and let me know what you think.

Explanation:
I'm writing a short story right now, about young Remus Lupin's wanderings before Prisoner of Azkaban - specifically, in France. So to inspire myself, I thought I'd put together a mix because I have to sit at the airport for 6 BLOODY HOURS TOMORROW. Grr. (And if you're wondering about some of the song choices, the story isn't a romance. Remus Lupin & Élodie Ancelin are platonic love, c'est tout.)

Explanation:
When I first spotted A Great and Terrible Beauty, I thought it was some generic Victorian romance. But I started reading it out of curiousity, and was immediately hooked. A fantasy novel set amidst a repressive society that excluded women? With a hint of India thrown into it? LOVE. So this is my magnum opus, a two-disc mix following Gemma Doyle (and her acquaintances) through the events of A Great and Terrible Beauty and Rebel Angels.

Perfect Weapon - a Gemma Doyle Mix in Two Parts )
[identity profile] blancwene.livejournal.com
Explanation:
This has nothing to do with the Civil War. But this might have something to do with the impact of the Industrial Revolution on British society.

Elizabeth Gaskell's novel, which details the cultural divide between the industrial North and the quiet South, has plenty of things to chew on: romance, social commentary, strikes, riots, proposals, and overbearing mothers (see song #9). But at the forefront of the novel - and the recent BBC miniseries - is the tumultuous relationship between Margaret Hale and John Thornton. I love Thornton (see icon), and Miss Hale makes for a spunky, opinionated heroine. Thus, my crazed mind spat out a short mix that touches on what I thought were memorable parts in the story.

My Sweetest Downfall - a North & South Mix )
[identity profile] blancwene.livejournal.com
Explanation:
The First Four Years, found among Laura Ingalls Wilder's things following the death of her daughter, was published in 1971. It's a rough draft, not nearly as polished as her previous eight novels - and tells a rather different story than the endearing ending of These Happy Golden Years would suggest. Laura and Almanzo's first years of marriage are filled with sorrows: debt, death, and sickness, ultimately culminating in the destruction of everything they owned. Some people hate this book; they say it's poorly-written, or out of character. I disagree. Despite knowing the conclusion, I cry every time I crack open this slim volume. And the fact that Laura and Almanzo's marriage lasted until his death at the age of 92 has to attest for something.

Not the Season - an EP for The First Four Years )
[identity profile] blancwene.livejournal.com
Explanation:
For [livejournal.com profile] anomilygrace, more Little House mixes ... maybe eventually I'll find myself all the way back at the Big Woods years.

These Happy Golden Years is the last complete novel in Laura Ingalls Wilder's series, and it covers a broad range of events: Laura's teaching career, Laura and Almanzo's courtship, and further developments in the township of DeSmet. You can trace how Laura's interests and relationships have changed and matured - rather than entirely focused on her friends and parties as in previous books, Laura appears surprisingly self-sufficient. (And no one can deny the sheer adorableness of the romantic ending.)

Coming Home Soon - an EP for These Happy Golden Years )

Explanation:
Gallifrey's destruction intrigues me in many ways. The Eighth Doctor brought about its downfall, yet nothing is known about how he did, or how it affected him. And the Ninth Doctor clearly feels the weight of this tragedy, as demonstrated throughout the 2005 season - yet he still remains reticent about what happened. So here, have a mix!
