A collaborative effort between
blancwene and her little sister. No spoilers for Eclipse.
Explanation:
My sister and I started reading the Twilight series together this summer, and after she finished New Moon the following conversation ensued:
Michelle: I want to make a mix for Bella Swan.
Me: Why?
Michelle: I don't think she has very good musical taste.
Me: You do realize that she's a fictional character, right?
Michelle: Oh ... right.

Following Some Dark Fortune - A Mix for Bella Swan
01. Gymnopédie no. 1 (Lent et douloureux)- Erik Satie
Satie's Gymnopédies are gentle yet somewhat irregular pieces of music which deliberately flouted many common practices in classical and even contemporary music. Its cheekiness in avoiding musical conventions, however, is barely noticeable, since the music is strongly guided by its poignant emotional load.
02. Nobody Knows What's Goin' On (In My Mind But Me) - The Chiffons
And I love him ...
Everybody says I'm too young, but what do they know?
03. My Moon My Man - Feist
Heart on my sleeve
Not where it should be
The song's out of key again
04. Chained and Bound - Alfreda Brockington
You know what I need
So come on, and give it to me
In your sweet loving arms
Is where I long to be
05. Time After Time - Erin Bode
Lying in my bed, I hear
The clock tick and think of you
Turning in circles
Confusion is nothing new
06. This Weather - Patrick Wolf
I am not going to set myself free here
I am following some dark fortune
Some circle in me
07. Leave Me (Like You Found Me) - Wilco
I sit on the couch alone
Where you sit when I'm not home
And I feel so close to you
08. Ondine (from the first movement of Gaspard de la Nuit) - Maurice Ravel
'Ondine,' based on a poem by Aloysius Bertrand, is reminiscent of the tinkling of the water in a stream, beautifully woven with cascades. This movement was intended to describe the water sprite in Bertrand's poem, attempting to lure men into her domain..
09. Keep the Car Running - The Arcade Fire
There’s a weight that’s pressing down
Late at night you can hear the sound
Even the noise you make when you sleep
Can’t swim across a river so deep
10. Love Me or Leave Me - Nina Simone
You won't believe me but I love you only
I'd rather be lonely than happy with somebody else
11. Soldier's Poem - Muse
I would still lay down my life for you
12. Faust, Midas, and Myself - Switchfoot
My golden eyes were dead
And a thought passed through my head
A heart that's made of gold can’t really beat at all
13. A Change Is Gonna Come - Aretha Franklin
And oh it’s been an uphill journey all the way
But I know, I know, I know
I know my change is gonna come
14. He Can Only Hold Her - Amy Winehouse
So he tries to pacify her, for what's inside her never dies

--The main image for the cover art comes from a photograph I got off Deviantart years back. I'm dreadfully sorry to whoever took that picture, but I never saved the artist's name.
--No spoilers for Eclipse, because I just finished it and Michelle's only on page 20.
--Basically, the song compilation process went something like the following: Michelle put a bunch of songs in a playlist, and I added some more. Then we went through, weeded out songs we didn't both agree on (that ended up being most of the rock songs), and I added the two piano pieces.
--Michelle would like to add that the Amy Winehouse, Muse, Switchfoot, and Alfreda Brockington songs were her suggestions, and that I might not have included them if she hadn't argued so vehemently for their inclusion. She also says that I'm making her sound smarter than she is, and that she wouldn't use "vehemently" in normal conversation.
--I currently feel conflicted about Bella. Conflicted about everyone, actually. I love discussions, so comment away!
Enjoy!

Date: 2007-08-28 02:07 am (UTC)My college friends and I are starting a "Read Out Loud Book Club," and our first selection was going to be Twilight. Alas, though, there are no really cheap used copies of it yet. :(
Who's your favourite character?

Date: 2007-08-28 11:26 pm (UTC)The books are not my favourite YA novels - in my opinion, Libba Bray's A Great and Terrible Beauty trilogy presents a much more fully fleshed-out fantasy world - but they are definitely addictive page turners.
(I think Stephenie Meyer may have intended them for a younger audience, like my little sister, who don't pick up on so many of the character flaws and plot holes.)

Date: 2007-08-25 12:23 am (UTC)One of these days I'll get around to reading books 2 and 3 in that series...

Date: 2007-08-28 04:14 am (UTC)They're not as good as the first book - well, except for Jacob Black, who I like a little better than Edward Cullen. (I can't help it.) But I do feel that Twilight is the strongest book in the series so far. :\
